St. Gregory’s school motto emphasises the importance of fairness, and the pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of sports and develop a strong sense of fair play and sportsmanship.
All children have access to at least two hours per week high quality physical education activities, through PE lessons and after-school sports clubs. In addition, selected year groups have the opportunity to learn to swim and to develop their swimming ability through a weekly lesson at the local swimming baths.
We hold an annual sports day, which is always tremendous fun and is designed to be inclusive for all pupils, whilst celebrating sporting talent and achievement of groups and individuals.
We link with our local Catholic high school, Holy Cross, as well as our near neighbours Westmorland School for various sporting events and activities. We also invest in the ‘Chorley Schools’ Sports Partnership’ which provides specialist coaching and hosts many school competitions.
We encourage the pupils to aspire to persevere and excel in sport, and we have recently been fortunate enough to enjoy some visits from local sporting heroes including Garry Flitcroft, Ricardo Gardner and Paul Sculthorpe. The children enjoyed talking to them and asking questions about how they made it to the top of their sporting profession.
Some of the sporting activities and clubs we have offered the children over the last twelve months are: football, netball, cheerleading, dodgeball, judo, fencing, gymnastics, French skipping, cricket, cycling, rugby, rounders, dance, cross-country, and multi-skills.
